Trend Watching: Blu-ray versus HD-DVD

Blu-ray was declared the winner of the format war back in February 2008 However, if search volume trends are telling us anything, maybe the competition was good for both formats.

Take a look at the below screen shot from Google Trends:

Throughout the second half of 2007 HD DVD was the clear leader according to Google Trends search index, and even the Spike in search traffic in mid February (around the time Wal-Mart dropped the format) HD-DVD was still in the lead.

The last 30 days however has shown an interesting trend. Not only has HD-DVD search volume dropped off, Blu-ray is also showing a downward trend.

Could it be that the competition was actually a good thing for the two formats? Are consumers beginning to loose interest?

I certainly don’t have all the answers, but will be following this trend very closely over the next little while.
